Gedde's Gallop

O.I.C. for the Williamstown excursion was Helen with Kerri as Aide De Camp.
So it was that six set off, headed SW with fair skies, no wind and only three short hills to climb out of Jell's Park leading to Glen Waverley. With them out of the way, it is basicslly down hill all the away to Williamstown where we shared lunch with all the Beautiful People.
A long, long leisurely lunch stop, which in hindsight, was not the best plan we could have adopted.
We forgot that night falls rather early in June.
Returning via St Kilda esplanade, swinging off at Elwood and heading for the sky rail trail, all was going to plan. Home in time for tea and a whisky. En route we decided to detour and explore a variety of un-named suburbs, remarking on some bizaar house styles, noting the  paucity of street signs and thoroughly enjoying ourselves. We enjoyed ourselves too much. Time had slipped by invisibly. Oop! Dark clouds forming. Sun low on the horizon. Evening pending and 25km still to go!
Not quite but almost...every man for himself. Jurgen and Jon took the high road whereas Helen, Kerri, John M & Werner took the low road and I think a few speed records may have been broken as we headed for Dandenong and back to the cars. Nonetheless, all's well that ends well. We packed the bikes and drove home ....... in the dark.
      A lovely 108km ride.
Thanks Helen and Kerri.

Alexander Triple Bypass

An octuplet gathered at Anderson for the triple banger. Kirsten and Helen had recceed the route the day before and were encouraging about the easiness that lay before us. Good news for Peter ("No, I have not had a heart attack") P, who'd successfully avoided riding for the past three weeks.
First leg, a warm up 15k to Wollamai race course. Jurgen, Mike and Jon took it easy as recovery from Tuesday's masochistic ride was not fully complete. Didn't deter John M nor Werner of course. They set out to challenge all speed records.
Second leg to Wonthaggi. 30k of sticky sand, minor hills a slighly warmish sun and NO WIND! Lunch at the some cafe where we dilligently obeyed social distancing requirements, especially as the local gendarme was standing right behind us.
Third leg and the pelaton had shrunk to six with John M and Peter D claiming better offers elsewhere. So, ..... this was where the hills were located!!!!!*#@*  Still, chips at San Remo, some drone footage by Mike at sundry points, then time to rest the bum and go home.

Thank you Kirsten and Helen.

Late lunch at San Remo

Alternative to "The Wall"

The 'Alternative to "The Wall" ride (christened by Jurgen as "The Great Masochistic Hills Ride"), was a rare feast.
At the Emerald start line, three of us (Mike, Jon B & Jurgen) eyed warily the other two (John  Bird & Werner), wondering  whether we had  bitten off more than we  could chew given the riding prowess of that pair.
Still, in for a penny.... away we went, STRAIGHT UP three  vertical dirt climbs back of Menzies Creek. They were tough but they were also the hardest on the ride so it was good to get them over and done with. Yes, there was oodles of climbing through Menzies Crk, Kalliista, Outer Olinda, The Patch and Monbulk but it was interspersed with  brief, scarily steep descents. And everywhere there was scenery that can only be envied. Much of the ride was spent on the side of a road just gazing at the country side. Of all the delights, the view from the top of Invermay Rd in Kallista/Monbulk takes your breath away with a 300degree elevated panorama of Silvan, Monbulk, The Patch, The Warby Ranges and beyond.

It was a short ride involving the expenditure of several rolls of Kodak film, nigh on 900m of climbing and several stops to refuel tired muscles. An added bonus for most of us was the fact we had never ridden those roads (and in my case, never knew they existed).

Banana time !

Coastal Capers, (Pt.Nepean ride) 11th.June

A delightful ride in beautiful winter weather. It was a balmy 10 deg when we left Safety Beach – as distinct from the zero deg start two days before when we left Emerald with frozen fingers and toes on the Gembrook ride. There were eight of us, all eager to finally get on the road bikes again. We raced down Nepean Hwy with gay abandon and before we knew it we were in Sorrento. On to Portsea for a coffee / lunch stop, featuring some mouth watering home made pies, then off to Pt.Nepean. So good to ride along the car free road to the fort. On the way back all speed records were broken endeavoring to catch up to Bob and Werner. Another great event to go into the ride almanac.

Mudgeway Mayhem Thursday June 4

Interesting array of transport assembled outside the "House of Mudgeway", five gravel bikes, Kirsten's glam carbon fibre number and John's roadie. Having mounted up we dropped into  Heidelberg's infamous road blender before escaping into a great autumn day of tasting Melbourne's inner city parklands, with small interludes of big and little city, street life. At some speed we wound along a bending  Yarra before mounting the noisy M3, till pipped for a breather following a short, sharp UP. Moving right along through Clifton Hill, past the Zoo and some reconfigured Maribinong River crossings, Docklands was reached for a highly regulated coffee respite. Werner's skill-set being tested as he attempted to mow down a Southbank pedestrian, "didn't see him!". Over the afternoon we covered some magical tree lined tracks heading south east through Cremorne, Hawthorn and on under Burke Rd. Once again, an interlude as Jurgen and Werner knocked heads over a "dropped handkerchief"?  Swinging around to the north west we squinted into the sun through Deepdene, then along the Bulleen flats, before returning to our start and a specially prepared warm soup, cheese and garlic bread, courtesy of Natalie. Thanks all for your company and John and Kirsten for an excellent ride.
